BMTC to transform the entire fleet to electric by 2030
The officials are making a roadmap to convert the most polluting diesel buses with e-buses.
It is planning to deploy 1,500 e-buses in three years out of them, 500 buses ( 100 AC buses- airport 20 buses and 80 other AC services) and 400 Non-AC buses in a year.
BMTC has 3,067 BS-III & 3,423 BS-IV vehicles
Currently, BMTC has 3,067 BS-III and 3,423 BS-IV vehicles. Centre to upgrade the emissions standards from BS-IV to BS-VI in April 2020.
Earlier it had planned to lease 80 e-buses under the FAME-I (faster adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles in India).
Transport minister DC Thammanna
But it was delayed as the transport minister DC Thammanna wanted to purchase them instead of leasing. They have also lost the subsidy of Rs 75 crore.
National Green Tribunal (NGT)
The state has received a request National Green Tribunal (NGT) to induct only eco-friendly vehicles such as CNG buses.
PPP model
The BMTC will induct 500 buses on lease under the FAME-II subsidy through PPP (Public-private partnership) model. In this model, the operator must provide buses with the qualified drivers and runs on the routes guided by the BMTC till the set duration. The corporation is responsible to deploy a conductor in a bus.
Power charges are bearable by BMTC
The operators must register the buses in Bengaluru and is responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles, charging infrastructure and operational costs such as tires, spares, lubricants, and wages of drivers and staff maintenance. The power charges are bearable by the BMTC.
If all the States public transport fleet is entirely transformed into electric, then half of the pollution from the country is reduced through this fleets, as more than the half of the population uses public transportation for their every day commutes in India.
When this happens, we will be not so far to achieve the goals of all vehicles electrification by 2030 experiencing the fresh air.
