EV Motor types AC & DC motor comparison

Electric vehicles have some important component which helps them to operate. The motor is also one of the important components. It is the propulsion system, converts the electric power and converts this into physical energy for movement. In simple words, it converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy. There are two types of electric motors widely used in electric vehicles to provide power to the wheels. The direct current (DC) motor and the alternating current (AC) motor. We will compare both DC and AC motor. So let us discuss EV Motor types AC & DC motor comparison.

Types of Electric Motors

There are many types of motors widely used and currently, most of the EVs manufacturers use BLDC motors, Induction, SRM, Permanent magnet motors. The electric motors are available in 3 main segments like AC motor, DC motor, and special purpose motors.

DC & AC Motors

DC motors may run from 96 to 192 volts and AC motor, three-phase AC motor running at 240 volts AC with a 300-volt battery pack. A typical motor will be in the 20,000 watts to the 30,000-watt range.

Now let us compare both types of motors, AC and DC Motor

AC Motor DC Motor
Single-speed transmission Multi-speed transmission
Lightweight Heavier for the same power
Less expensive More expensive
95% efficiency at full load 85-95% efficiency at full load
More expensive controller Simple controller
Motor/ Controller/ Inverter/

more expensive

Motor/Controller less expensive

DC Motors has three main components

  • A set of coils that creates the magnetic forces that produce torque.
  • A rotor or armature mounted on bearings that turn inside the field.
  • Commuting device that reverses the magnetic forces and makes the armature turn providing the horsepower.

Whereas, the AC motor is less expensive and lightweight. The DC motor has a simple controller making the DC motor/controller combination less expensive. But you will have the main disadvantage of the AC motor is the cost of the electronics package needed to convert the battery’s direct current to alternating current for the motor.
