The two-wheeler market is the most valuable in India. It’s so valuable that India leads the two-wheeler sales in the entire world. Urban two-wheeler riders are now willing to replace their motorcycles as early as possible. The Two-wheeler manufacturers are also updating their lineup simultaneously to meet this demand. But the Electric Two-wheeler sales in India are not equivalent to their IC counterparts in terms of market proportion.

Global Electric Two-wheeler sales

If we consider the global electric vehicle scenario, the overall growth rate in electric Two-wheelers is only 10 percent from 2014-19. Electric Two-wheelers consist of only two categories. They are the scooter or moped category and motorcycle category. These vehicles came into the market around 2010 but the early Electric Two-wheelers were low in performance and range. These vehicles were popular as an eco-friendly alternative to petrol two-wheelers because they have no tailpipe emissions.

Environmental concern

Most of the electric two-wheelers which are on road today are mostly due to economical and environmental concerns. However, in India, the concern was mostly economical excluding environmentalists. The environmental concern is only an added advantage for most people who didn’t even realize it. Riders across the world are aware of the depletion of fossil fuels due to continuous usage for more than 200 years will make a scarcity of resources. With this scarcity and prediction of upcoming expenses for petrol motorcycles, a few riders are switching to electric in advance.

Majority Sales

If we take a look at the market of electric Two-wheelers, the majority of the market share is in Fleet operations. The fleet rental startups have a significant increase with Electric Two-wheelers. This is due to most of the inter-city fleet operations which are within battery range. Low maintenance expense is also a considerable advantage for fleet operations.

Conclusion

The sale of electric Two-wheelers in India is up to 1,50,000 units approximately for the year 2020. This is exponential growth when compared to the previous years but the sales are yet to reach greater numbers in the World’s largest Two-wheeler market.
