NITI Aayog

NITI Aayog

NITI Aayog on 21st June gave a deadline of two weeks to submit the roadmap for electric vehicles (EVs). But it is likely to extend the deadline, people aware of the development said.

NITI Aayog extends the deadline for automakers

The companies cannot sell their ICE vehicles two and three-wheeler after 2023 and 2025 if it is implemented the companies cannot sell their conventional two- and three-wheelers beyond the mentioned timeline.

When the budget will be presented the two weeks will end, companies will get a few more weeks to respond. As many companies seeking more time to come up with a proper plan for the adoption of EVs.

NITI Aayog

The extension of a deadline seems to be happening due to the two-wheeler automakers criticizing the NITI Aayog’s proposal, it includes the big players such as Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj and TVS Motor Co Chairman Venu Srinivasan, etc.

Automakers claiming that sudden change will result in job loss as India imports many components used in electric vehicles.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran

Tata Sons Chairman, N Chandrasekaran said that the government and industry must work together to reduce the emissions in the country.

TVS Motor Chairman Venu Srinivasan

Holding the industry with 20 million vehicles and $15 billion is not possible to make in two weeks, it will take four months at least to respond as the stakeholder as it needs to approach to the supply chain, vendors, battery makers, and global consulting firms said, Srinivasan.

Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj

Rajiv Bajaj said that he believes 100% transition is completely uncalled for. He says that “I am shocked because ICE of Indian two- and three-wheelers that are the global benchmark for low emission and high fuel efficiency must be banned within the next few years with scant deliberation on where the unemployed are to go or from where the electricity for charging is to come.”

Government is likely to adopt EVs in main cities by 2025 instead of a nationwide adoption. As per pollution level in a particular city, the implementation of the norm will be done phase wise. After the pollution levels check, the NITI Aayog will give a timeline to the companies to sell only electric three and two-wheelers in those cities,” they said.
