Volkswagen QuantumScape batteries
Apart from constant Research and development for future electric cars, Volkswagen appears to be investing equivalent efforts for battery technologies, charging networks, and other innovations. V0lkswagen is now planning for 6 Gigafactories which has 240Gwh of production capacity. The German auto major has a strategic partnership with solid-state battery maker Quantumscape. So let’s know more about Volkswagen QuantumScape batteries.
About Quantumscape
QuantumScape is a Californian company founded in 2010 with a goal to develop next-generation solid-state lithium-metal batteries. Volkswagen is one of their investor and partner with an investment of up to 300 million USD in Quantumscape. Here are some exciting statements from Quantumscape about their solid-state batteries.
-
Higher energy density
Since there is no carbon or carbon/silicon anode, this solid-state battery further increases energy density. This is because it uses no excess lithium on the anode. Some previous attempts at solid-state batteries have a lithium foil or other deposited-lithium anode, which reduces the energy density.
-
Long life
As there is no side reaction between the liquid electrolyte and the carbon in the anode of conventional lithium-ion cells, QuantumScape’s battery will last hundreds of thousands of miles of driving. The alternative solid-state has a lithium metal anode that is unable to work reliably at close to room temperatures (30 ºC) with zero excess lithium at high current densities (>3mAh/cm2) for more than a few hundred cycles. Also, this has an outcome of short-circuit or capacity loss before meeting the life target. At present, the test results show that QuantumScape’s battery technology is able to run for over 800 cycles with greater than 80% capacity retention.
-
Low-temperature operation
QuantumScape’s solid-state separator is designed to operate at a wide range of temperatures. This separator has been tested to -30 degrees Celsius, temperatures which may impact the functioning of other solid-state designs.
-
Safety
QuantumScape’s solid-state separator is not combustible and also isolates anode from the cathode even at very high temperatures. The term high temperature here indicates that it is much higher than conventional organic separators used in lithium-ion batteries.
