SMEV Seeks Rs.20,000 Crore To Promote Electric Vehicles In The Country

Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) sought an allocation of 20,000 crores in the next two years for the promotion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the country. It appealed to the government to impose a “notional green cess” on conventional vehicles in the upcoming expected budget to fund the drive. Hopefully, it will be a complete Electric Vehicles market in the country by 2030.

SMEV said that phase-II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) should give information with a 6-year plan and time-bound needed for implementation.

SMEV Director-General Sohinder Gill Says

“Electric mobility needs stable and long-term policy support concentrated dose of customer incentives and massive awareness campaign to reach a target of 30 per cent EVs by 2030.”

SMEV Expecting The Government To Target 1 Million EVs

SMEV is also expecting the government to target 1 million EVs in the top ten polluted cities in the country.

“SMEV recommends a notional green cess on all IC (internal combustion) engine vehicles to create this corpus rather than dipping into the exchequer.

Lohia Auto Industries, the Chief Executive Officer Ayush Lohia

“In addition, GST (goods and services tax) on all categories of EVs, including batteries, should not exceed 5% with input tax credit availability, “a minimum of 10 years, therefore making it long-term,” said, Lohia Auto Industries, the Chief Executive Officer Ayush Lohia.

The SMEV said if there are EVs coming up on roads than only there will be a supply chain of critical powertrains.

Sohinder Gill Says

“Till then, the current import duty concessions should continue, o that the vehicles do not end up becoming costlier,” Gill added

Government Should Give More Thrust On e-Mobility

“The government should give more thrust on e-mobility under the smart city project which is missing, currently,” said SMEV and the interim Budget may be presented on February 1.
