The new electric vehicle manufacturing unit is spread over half a million square feet and will give job opportunities for 800 people.

Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd. said, “This alignment reflects our belief that light Electric vehicles for sustainable urban mobility is an idea whose time may finally have come. Thus, this investment at Akurdi completes the virtuous cycle of hi-tech R&D competencies, high-efficiency engineering capabilities, world-class supply chain synergies, and a global distribution network which should leapfrog us into a market-leading position in EVs in India and overseas.”

The unit will have robotic and automated manufacturing systems for everything that includes logistics and material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance.

Earlier this year, Bajaj Auto had partnered with Pierer Mobility AG to develop electric two-wheelers. They are strengthening their 15-year long strategic cooperation to develop electric two-wheelers to meet the growing demand for innovative e-mobility solutions.

“PIERER Mobility AG and Bajaj Auto Limited originally joined forces to make a sizeable and relentless footprint in the international motorcycle industry and, as the partnership successfully reaches almost fifteen years of existence, the two companies have decided to jointly explore the zero tailpipe emissions, low maintenance, and long-lasting benefits of light electric vehicles in urban settings and dense metropolitan areas,” it said.

“The initial output from this manufacturing impetus will see the first of these shared platform vehicles beginning of 2022,” it added. The companies are also working on the development of high-end electric motorcycles.

Last year the company had announced that it is planning to set up a dedicated production plant for its electric scooter Chetak.
