Kerala Govt signed EOI with Toshiba to manufacture Li-ion batteries

The Kerala government has signed an Expression of interest (EOI) with Toshiba Group for the technology transfer and manufacturing of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicles (EV). 




This announcement came by the Chief Minster’s office. The agreement is an outcome of the Japan visit by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the head of a high-level State delegation and was signed in Tokyo at the investment seminar organised in the Japanese capital as part of the visit.

He addressed the Kerala State Investment Promotion Seminar organised with the participation of 150 major Japanese investors at the Indian Embassy, Tokyo. The Vijayan delegation includes two state Ministers and senior bureaucrats will visit South Korea as the next visit and is expected to come back on December 4.

KSEB charging Stations installation 

Recently, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) made an announcement to set-up 70 EV charging stations in Kerala across 14 districts. The board plans to launch six stations in the initial phase. Whereas the remaining stations will be launched after reviewing the operations of these.




In the initial phase, the board will launch six stations in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur. These charging stations will be set up at KSEB substations along the national and state highways.

The highlight of this initiative is that private parties also can set up charging stations and KSEB will supply electricity to them at the rate of Rs 5 per unit as directed by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC).

In April, India signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Bolivia got its way into the lithium reserves of the South American nation for exploration and extraction of lithium.

In January, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and Libcoin were in the news that they announced to build 1 GWh lithium-ion battery plant in India. Its capacity will be scaled up to 30GWh in due course said the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises.
