Oben Electric Unveils Game-Changing O100 Platform for Budget EV Motorcycles

Bangalore, May 2025 – In a bold move that promises to reshape the affordable electric two-wheeler market in India, Oben Electric has unveiled its latest innovation: the O100 platform. Designed specifically for electric motorcycles priced under ₹1 lakh, the O100 platform is a strategic leap aimed at democratizing EV ownership while maintaining performance, reliability, and style.

The Vision Behind O100

Oben Electric, a Bangalore-based electric vehicle (EV) startup known for its innovation in the EV motorcycle segment, has made headlines before with its flagship model, the Oben Rorr. The O100 platform marks a significant shift in focus—targeting mass-market accessibility without compromising on the core values of design, performance, and sustainability.

The name O100 stands for “Oben under 100K”, reflecting the company’s goal to develop a scalable EV platform that supports motorcycles with an ex-showroom price tag below ₹1,00,000. This bold move comes at a time when most electric motorcycles in India still hover in the ₹1.2–1.5 lakh range.

Key Features of the O100 Platform

The O100 is not just a stripped-down version of existing products—it’s a ground-up innovation. Here are some of the key highlights:

1. Modular Architecture

The O100 is built on a lightweight yet robust modular chassis that supports various configurations. This means that different models—targeted at urban riders, delivery fleets, or even rural users—can be developed on the same platform, significantly reducing production and development costs.

2. Optimized Battery Pack

To achieve the sub-₹1 lakh price point, Oben has designed a new lithium-ion battery pack with a smaller capacity optimized for short- to mid-range urban commutes (around 80–100 km range on a single charge). The battery is also swappable, which opens the door for faster refueling and future integration with battery-as-a-service (BaaS) providers.

3. Efficient Motor Technology

The O100 platform uses a highly efficient BLDC hub motor to lower maintenance costs while offering enough torque for city usage. While the top speed is limited to around 70–80 km/h, this is considered sufficient for urban riders and first-time users transitioning from petrol two-wheelers.

4. Smart Connectivity

Even at the budget end, Oben hasn’t compromised on technology. The platform supports a digital dashboard with smartphone connectivity, real-time diagnostics, over-the-air updates, and turn-by-turn navigation—all accessed via the Oben Electric mobile app.

5. Sustainability at the Core

All components are locally sourced, and the platform has been designed keeping India’s unique climatic and road conditions in mind. Oben aims for high localization (90%+) to qualify for FAME incentives and reduce dependency on imports.

Market Strategy & Launch Plans

Oben Electric plans to launch its first motorcycle based on the O100 platform in late 2025. The company is targeting both B2C and B2B segments, with special editions tailored for gig economy delivery services such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Amazon, which are increasingly electrifying their fleets.

According to Madhumita Agrawal, CEO and Co-founder of Oben Electric:

“Our mission is to make electric mobility truly accessible to the common Indian. The O100 platform is a game-changer for the industry and a step forward in our journey to accelerate EV adoption in Bharat—not just India’s metro cities but Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns as well.”

The company is also in talks with state governments for partnerships to roll out localized subsidies and charging infrastructure to support widespread adoption.

Competitive Landscape

While several companies are vying for the affordable EV two-wheeler market, few have achieved the balance between price, performance, and reliability. Players like Ola Electric, Hero Electric, and Bajaj have launched models in the affordable scooter segment, but Oben’s focus on electric motorcycles gives it a unique edge.

Motorcycles, which account for a larger share of the Indian two-wheeler market compared to scooters, have so far seen fewer affordable EV options. With the O100 platform, Oben aims to fill this gap and capture a significant market share.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Of course, the road to electric mobility for all is not without obstacles. Battery costs, supply chain volatility, and infrastructure gaps still pose challenges. However, Oben’s innovative and cost-effective approach through O100 could serve as a blueprint for the industry.

If successful, the platform could open new frontiers in EV penetration across India and even emerging markets abroad. The company’s long-term vision includes exporting O100-based models to Southeast Asia and Africa, where affordable and durable two-wheelers are in high demand.

Conclusion

Oben Electric’s O100 platform is not just a technological innovation—it’s a statement. A statement that says electric mobility is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and one that every Indian, regardless of income bracket, should have access to. With the O100, Oben is positioning itself not just as an EV manufacturer, but as a torchbearer for affordable, clean, and inclusive transportation in the 21st century.

As India gears up for an electric future, Oben’s O100 could very well be the spark that lights the way.
