Karnataka govt proposes 20% subsidy on installation of EV charging stations

In an initiative to encourage and promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, the government of Karnataka has proposed a subsidy of 20% or Rs 10 lakh whichever is larger for the installation of public charging stations for electric vehicles.

For setting up one EV charging station it prices between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 40 lakh. The subsidy will probably encourage individuals to invest in setting up charging stations. However, there isn’t been an official announcement regarding this and considering it still as a proposal.

An office within the state’s commerce and industries division said that they have decided to offer a subsidy of 20% to any individual who comes forward to develop charging stations. The proposal on subsidy will be sent to the government for approval.

Karnataka is the first state to introduce the EV policy in 2017, the State government aims to make Bengaluru the electric vehicle capital of India.

The Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy aim for 100% electric mobility by 2030 in several segments. Since then the growth of the electric vehicles is very less and there are about 10,000 electric vehicles in Bengaluru. Lack of charging infrastructure becoming hindrance in growth.

At present, the Bengaluru has 70 EV charging stations with 126 chargers out of which most of them are installed in the public areas. More 150 charging stations will be installed as per the government-sanctioned orders.

The power ministry had issued revised guidelines and standards on EV charging infrastructure in October 2019. The state has proposed to make at least one charging station available in a grid of 3kmX3km and one station at every 25 km on both sides of highways/roads.
