As Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers gain a greater share of the European market, other manufacturers are taking notice. The affordability of Chinese EVs is one of the major factors driving their popularity here, and this is where global brands that are not Chinese are now focusing their efforts. The Hyundai Ioniq 2 EV is reportedly being positioned as a cost-effective and viable electric vehicle.
In Europe, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 have been available for some time and have done reasonably well. Even though both of these electric cars offer a long range and are quite well equipped, they are much more expensive than offerings from Chinese manufacturers.
It has already been confirmed by Hyundai’s officials in Europe that a more affordable EV will be developed for these markets, with the price being estimated at around 20,000 euros. Will it be called the Ioniq 2? It is very likely.
In Europe, the entry-level Hyundai EV will have to fend off the competition from China, but it will also face stiff competition from the likes of VW ID.2, the Skoda, and the new Cupra models. What’s likely to open up more options is Hyundai’s new second-gen EV platform. This new platform is called IMA, which stands for “Integrated Modular Architecture.” IMA will be the successor to EV’s E-GMP (Electric Global Module Platform), which underpins the current generation of Hyundai EVs, such as the EV5, EV6, and EV6.
