The Union Government has decided to waive off registration fee for electric vehicles (EVs). It also plans to request the state governments to waive off or at least reduce the road tax for encouraging the EVs.
Govt to waive off registration fee for EVs
The meeting which was held on Monday chaired by Union minister Nitin Gadkari decided regarding this decision.
Road transport ministry
The road transport ministry will soon issue a draft notice to know the feedback of the public. The ministry can set up the registrations fee as it is empowered by the Centre motor vehicles rules.
Registration fee at present
At present, the two-wheelers are charged Rs.50 as registration fee and for a private four-wheeler, they need to pay Rs 600.
“The amount may not be huge. But this is a signal of how the government is keen to walk an extra mile to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. We have already exempted the permit condition for an electric vehicle, which people buy for commercial operation,” said an official.
The huge difference can be seen when all the States reduce or waive off road tax on electric vehicles.
Few States don’t impose the tax on EVs
Currently, there are few states which don’t impose road tax while registering the EVs. The States includes Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Goa. In other States, road tax for electric vehicles is between 4% to 10%.
The government is taking all the necessary steps possible towards reaching the target which had been set to making electric vehicles to 30% by 2030.
The push towards eco-mobility will make India a greener and safer country. The Government is taking many initiatives by providing incentives under its FAME scheme.
