Fire breaks out in a Tata Nexon EV in Pune

The horrific accident was caused by unauthorized repairs

Tata Motors makes petrol, diesel, and electric cars, and is one of the leading car makers in the country. In 2019, the company entered the passenger electric vehicles segment and has since become a leader. At present, the Tata Nexon EV is the top-selling electric SUV in the field.

Since Tata Motors is one of the best leading EV manufacturers and its latest Nexon EV has a huge following in the country, every news about them gets attention fast.

It has been reported that a video of a Tata Nexon EV rising up in flames has recently become viral. There have been alarms raised among electric vehicle enthusiasts as a result of this. It is believed that the accident occurred in Pune, where a car caught fire as authorities were fighting it to put out the flames.

We have now been provided with the company’s official statement about the incident that occurred. Taking a look at the details of the incident and their official statement, we can get a better understanding of what happened.

Tata Motors said in an official statement that the cause of the recent Tata Nexon EV fire incident was improper left headlamp replacement at an unauthorized service center. A short circuit caused by an unfortunate replacement resulted in a fire that was caused as the result of the short circuit.

“Following the investigation conducted by our team of competent officials, we discovered the cause of the accident. As per the investigation report, the left headlight of this vehicle had been replaced. And the team also cleared an unauthorized workshop that performed this replacement as part of a repair. This electrical malfunction and thermal incident are believed to have occurred due to a flaw in how the workshop installed and repaired the headlights.  As far as the affected area is concerned, it focuses only on the area where the repair work has been completed. Throughout the process, we will keep in touch with the customer and ensure that they get the support they need.

We appeal to all customers because the automotive market is constantly evolving with new technologies and modern electronic components. This is both in terms of internal combustion engines and electric vehicles that require skilled craftsmanship. To prevent such accidents from happening in the future, we strongly recommend that our customers have their vehicles fitted with specification-compliant components, accessories and replacement parts by a Tata Motors authorized workshop to prevent such events from happening in the future,” the Company has said.

In previous reports, it has been reported that there have been several incidents in India in which electric cars have caught fire. A Tata Nexon EV parked in front of a Mumbai restaurant caught fire in June 2022, raising concerns about the safety of electric vehicles. It should be noted that despite recent incidents, the Tata Nexon EV continues to be India’s best-selling electric vehicles.

It would be good if we could think about how to prevent fire accidents like this in the future. It is imperative to note that performing unauthorized repairs may void your vehicle’s warranty. An untrained person can tamper with the vehicle and cause further damage.

If you have problems with your electric vehicles, we recommend contacting an authorized service center. The incident raises legitimate concerns about electric vehicles’ safety, but it’s worth noting that fires can occur in any vehicle. Proper maintenance and following manufacturer guidelines can prevent such accidents. As the electric vehicles industry continues to grow, manufacturers must prioritize safety and address issues as they arise.
