The Maruti eVX SUV will also be sold in European markets
The eVX is Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle that will be introduced in the Indian market sometime next year. Several markets will be served by the carmaker’s new electric SUV, which will be built at its Gujarat plant.
In 2025, Toyota will also launch its own version of the eVX, which will be jointly developed with Nissan.
The Maruti eVX is being exported internationally
Including batteries, the eVX will have a high degree of localization in order to achieve an aggressive price point. “It is not enough to simply launch a car with imported batteries and motors,” Rahul Bharti, executive director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, said at the India EV Conclave organized by Autocar Professional in Chennai. “In our plans, we plan to manufacture EVs locally, so we will have a locally made battery and motor in our EV, and we will export the model from India to build at scale,” he added.
While pricing the newly launched born-EV SUV against rival Tata Nexon EV, which is based on a modified combustion engine platform, remains to be seen, Maruti Suzuki may be aggressive. The eVX will also compete against the upcoming Creta EV, which is expected to be released around the same time as the Nexon and MG ZS electric vehicles.
Exports of Indian batteries have already begun
It is expected that Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility is going to build batteries for hybrid vehicles in the near future, and it will also produce batteries for electric vehicles in the future. By the end of next year, exports to other countries will reach a value of Rs 1,000 crore and are already underway.
