Piaggio To Launch Electric Three-Wheeler In India

Italian Motor Vehicle Manufacturer Will Launch Electric Three-Wheeler In India by Mid 2019
Piaggio, an Italian motor vehicle manufacturer, which manufactures the two and three-wheelers.The company had announced that it will launch fully electric three-wheeler in India by the middle of 2019.
Piaggio started its operations in India in 1999 named as “Ape.” It also manufactures compact commercial vehicles under seven brands-Piaggio, Vespa, Gilera, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi, and Scarabeo. Its Headquarter is in Italy. The company is founded by Rinaldo Piaggio in 1884, initially producing locomotives and railway carriages.
Piaggio To Upgrade Existing Vehicles
The company’s top official said that the automaker is willing to upgrade the existing lineup products which also includes small commercial vehicles that are less than one-tonne load both in cargo and passenger segments.
The Automaker Is Ready In Advance For BS-VI Emission Norms
The automaker wants to keep ready in advance for the upcoming BS-VI emission norms ( norm to regulate the emission of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter (PM) and sulfur oxides from vehicles using internal combustion engines.)
Piaggio Vehicles MD & CEO Diego Graffi Says
Piaggio Vehicles MD & CEO Diego Graffi said, “India is one country which is investing more on electric mobility. We are preparing for this right in advance, demand at the moment is not very big but we expect it to increase quite fast so we plan to introduce our fully electric three-wheeler by the middle of this year.”
The company is planning to set up the electric three-wheelers in the country itself with the elements such as lithium-ion battery cells which can be obtained from the external suppliers. Meanwhile, the management system of engine and battery will be produced totally within India.
Company To Focus On All-Electric Vehicles
As of now, the company is completely focusing on all-electric vehicles avoiding the hybrid ones which are currently under operations in Europe.
Not only Piaggio there are many automakers looking for the manufacture of three-wheelers segment in India. As Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd and SmartE recently made a vow that there will be 1000 electric three-wheelers for the Delhi-NCR region. As per the SmartE, the final count may go up to 10,000 by 2020.
