Bajaj Auto plans dedicated plant for producing its electric scooter Chetak 

A very popular and pioneer Indian two-wheeler brand and manufacturer Bajaj Auto Ltd is planning to set up a dedicated production plant for its electric scooter Chetak.

Managing director, Bajaj Auto Rajiv Bajaj said that the company is planning to ramp up production capacity for Chetak and as a result is mulling to set up a dedicated manufacturing unit with an annual capacity of half a million units for the same.

The electric scooter is presently is manufactured at the company’s Chakan plant. It has also rolled out premium KTM and Husqvarna bikes for the domestic as well as export markets from the site.

The company is already known to be working on a pipeline of new electric vehicles and aims to expand its EV portfolio. Currently, it has only one electric scooter on sale is Bajaj Chetak. It was first unveiled on 16th October 2019 and launched on January 14, 2020.

Bajaj Chetak electric scooter is powered with a 4kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery which is IP67-rated and can be charged using a 5-15 amp electrical outlet. The company will also provide a home charging station at a nominal cost. Interestingly it got two driving modes-Eco and Sport with a reverse assist mode. These two driving modes provide two different range, in Eco Mode you get 95 km and in Sport Mode, you get a range of 85 km.

It features a single-sided tubular suspension at the front and a mono-shock at the rear. A single-sided cast aluminium swingarm is also present. There are 12-inch wheels with a disc up front and a drum at the rear. The speciality of this electric scooter is it got a regenerative braking system.

The new Chetak is made up of all-metal body and it doesn’t have Bajaj branding on it. The instrumental console is digital and it gets a horseshoe-shaped LED headlight with DRLs, sequential scrolling LED blinkers and a mobile app to assist the rider.

According to the Siam data, Bajaj Auto produced 301 units of its electric Chetak in September and sold 288 units during the month. So far this fiscal, the company has sold 600 units of its electric scooter. The electric Chetak is priced with a starting price of ₹1 lakhThe EV was launched only in Pune and Bangalore.
