Motional using Hyundai electric Ioniq 5 for its robotaxi services
A joint venture between South Korean automaker Hyundai and Irish auto technology company Aptiv Motional Inc has selected Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 for its upcoming autonomous robotaxi service. The IONIQ 5 will not require a driver to drive it, it is driverless technology.
The customers can book the Motional robotaxi with the help of a Lyft app from the 2023 start. This will be the first experience for many people with driverless technology. The Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 from Motional will have Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities.
It is the first robotaxi of Motional which is a result of great cooperation between both the companies such as Hyundai’s manufacturing and design teams and Motional’s autonomy, robotics, and software teams. It is a great opportunity and combination of electrification and autonomy which will bring revolution in mobility.
The IONIQ 5 is the first model in Hyundai’s new IONIQ brand which is completely dedicated to electric vehicles. It is the midsize CUV and has been launched during a virtual world premiere event.

IONIQ 5 is available in two battery pack options, either 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh, and two electric motor layouts with rear motor only or with both front and rear motors. It provides a top speed of 185 km/h. With a 350-kW charger, IONIQ 5 can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes.
Motional announced a joint venture in March 2020 whereas Hyundai said it would spend $1.6 billion to compete in the segment of an autonomous vehicle.
“We’re excited to announce that the critically acclaimed, all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be the vehicle platform for Motional’s next-generation robotaxi. This will be the vehicle used in Motional’s fully driverless service with Lyft,” Motional’s VP Gretchen Effgen.
He said that this service will be launching in 2023 and will mark the largest deployment of robotaxis on a major rideshare network and has the potential to introduce millions of Americans to driverless technology. He said they believe that autonomous vehicles can provide safer and more sustainable mobility options.
Recently, the Hyundai Motor Co has launched its IONIQ 5 an all-electric midsize CUV. IONIQ 5 comes with a unique exterior design which is characterized by the Pony-inspired profile over a 3,000-mm wheelbase. Find the complete details about the electric crossover in the below link.
