GM looks for ‘flying car’ market uses its Ultium electric battery

General Motors the US carmaker is looking out for possibilities for the aerial taxi market which includes the building of the vehicles such as colloquially as “flying cars.”

The Chief Executive Mary Barra made her first reference to Detroit-based GM’s interest in the air taxi market. It suits with the development of electric vehicles (EVs) and its Ultium advanced electric battery.

“We believe strongly in our EV future and not just for vehicles,” she said. “The strength and flexibility of our Ultium battery system open doors” for many uses, she added, “including aerial mobility.”

In more than 100 aerial vehicle startups corporates and private which includes drones and electric air taxis have invested $2.3 billion.

GM is looking for all options to build, supply or partner as it decides to partner with some of the automakers such as Hyundai Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp, Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG and Geely Automobile in the still-developing market.

General Motors has also unveiled a new long-range battery to power an expanded lineup of electric cars as part to compete with the sector leader Tesla. The GM said that its Ultium batteries will range up to 400 miles ( 645 kilometres) between chargers, designed for fast charging and adaptable for a variety of vehicles.

The US biggest carmaker said that it is expanding its lineup of electric vehicles with several new electric models this year which will include a new version of the Bolt EV launching in late 2020.

GM is also developing autonomous electric vehicles via its Cruise unit based in California. Recently, Cruise LLC is an autonomous car startup majority-owned by General Motors Co., has unveiled its all-electric self-driving shuttle (autonomous ride-sharing service).

General Motors Co (GM) and Honda Motor Co Ltd has announced that they would jointly develop two new electric vehicles for Honda. The companies are looking for expanding their alliance.

The GM batteries will be installed in the new vehicles and they will be assembled in the GM plants in North America. The Honda is planning to commence its sale in the United States and Canada in 2024.
