ABB Power & Ashok Leyland signed MoU
The joint venture will develop pilot electric bus which is based on ABB’s innovative flash charge technology, TOSA which will charge up the battery in just a few seconds while passengers get on and off the bus. This means electric bus drivers need not worry about charging time as it charges in seconds. It helps to avoid the need to pull the e-bus out of the service for recharging every few hours.
Managing Director, ABB Power Products and Systems India Ltd, N Venu said that “The aim is to provide a zero local emission mass public transportation bus system with high passenger capacity. We are pleased to be working with Ashok Leyland in advancing responsible urban mobility.”
About the partnership, N Saravanan, Chief Technology Officer, Ashok Leyland, said, “In this journey, to stay competitive in our Domestic and Global markets, we are joining hands with ABB to use their world-renowned TOSA technology on our e-buses to take forward our vision of expanding in the EV space.”
Currently, the Indian government is making efforts to promote and encourage the use of electric vehicles in the country, taking many possible initiatives such as providing subsidies, road tax and registration fees exemptions and making mandatory in many places. However, the company says that for operators the switch to electric is a big task and primary challenge.
The buses with ABB’s TOSA technology will be charged at selected bus stops with charging infrastructure and the batteries are charged within 15 seconds with a 600-kilowatt power boost. Apart from this, an additional few minutes charge at the final terminal enables a full recharge without disturbing the bus’s schedule.
