The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is planning to install 70 e-charging stations across the state. In the initial phase, the board will launch six stations in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur. These charging stations will be set up at KSEB substations along the national and state highways.

In Kochi, the board plans to erect the charging station at Kaloor substation. The other charging stations will be at Nemom electrical section office in Thiruvananthapuram, Olayil section office in Kollam, Viyyur substation in Thrissur, Nallalam substation in Kozhikode and Chovva substation in Kannur.

Currently, the tendering process is under way and they are getting a lot of applications from agencies to set up the stations. The agencies should meet the technical parameters cited by the board and financial proposals will be invited from them. The agency which quotes the lowest rate will be given the letter of award (LOA)

The highlight of this initiative is that private parties also can set up charging stations and KSEB will supply electricity to them at the rate of Rs 5 per unit as directed by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC).

On a whole, 70 charging stations will be set up across the 14 districts. While six stations will be set up as a part of the initial phase. Whereas the remaining stations will be launched after reviewing the operations of these. The estimated cost of setting up a station is D15-20 lakh.

The state’s first electric vehicle charging station was installed at Indian Oil Corporation’s retail outlet, United Fuels at Edappally in June. The EVs can still charge at this station at free of cost. According to an IOC official, 11 electric cars are registered in Kochi till now. On an average, around two-three cars come to the outlet daily for charging. By March 31, 2020, they are planning to open 25 charging stations across Kerala.
