Electric bicycle with portable batteries gives a range of 100km+ on a single charge




LightSpeed Mobility Pvt Ltd is a Gujarat based electric vehicles startup. It started by two brothers Rahil and Rushad Rupawala founders of the startup. Established in November 2016, the startup provides electric mobility solutions by building e-bikes. Their e-bikes are ideal lifestyle statement for fitness enthusiasts and for those people looking for alternate personal mobility devices. 

Their e-bikes not only providing eco-friendly solutions but also taking care of your fitness. The startup is focused to solve the air pollution and traffic congestions problems in the cities and in developing towns.

About Founders & Startup

Rahil is a Mechanical Engineer from Symbiosis and did his Masters in Transport Design from Coventry University in the UK. Rushad has two Master degrees in MSC in Management from the University of Sheffield in the UK and Master’s degree in Risk Management from Monash University in Australia.

Earlier, they were working on developing an electric chair for differently-abled, the prototype was also made but the production costs were much high. Then both shifted their focus on different segments. They witnessed and inspired by the Europen countries electric bicycles and their success in the segment.

Then they decided an e-bicycle is better suitable for Indian markets targeted to school going students, college-goers, as well as professionals, can take it to their workplaces. It is completely a family e-bicycle.

 

With these thoughts, the Startup has born and they started researching markets by visiting different exhibitions to understand the needs and trends of the markets.

In 2016, they have come up with their first official prototype in June 2016. They had many brainstorming sessions for 2 months and formed a small team of designers from National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and experienced electrical engineers.

Before the startup was working by ‘Indium Design’ and later officially registered itself on 17 November 2016 and changed the name to Lightspeed.

LightSpeed’s electric bicycles and operations

Coming to its electric bicycle, the startup made two e-bikes models in June 2017. One is Dryft and adventure e-bike and other is Glyd, best suited for urban settings. Both electric bicycles are specially designed for Indian markets.

Features 

The e-bicycle features are response e-brakes for emergency braking, front shock absorbers, multi-level pedal, manual pedalling, pedal boost, electric throttle, easy on the pocket, assembly, multi-feature dynamic display.

Dryft adventure electric bicycle 

Dryft is a multi-utility electric bicycle and is the city and adventure bicycle. It has a 250 Watt 32NM rear hub motor which is powered by a 10.4Ah lithium-ion battery. The battery comes in a smart bottle case is placed on the bottom bracket of Dryft.

It is removable and portable which charges in just 3 to 4 hours. It is priced from Rs.40,999 to 47,000 and can also be purchased on EMI starting from 3584.

Glyd electric bicycle 

It is an urban electric bicycle designed specifically for riding to work, running day-to-day errands and cycling for pleasure on even roads.

It has a 250 Watt 32NM rear hub motor on Glyd is powered by a 7.8 Ah lithium-ion battery. Its battery also comes in a smart bottle case and fits on the bottom of the racket of the bicycle. It takes 3 hours to charge this battery. It is priced at Rs.31,000. It can be purchased on EMI too its starting price is Rs.2750.




The startup had 10 bicycles in these models across eight cities for the people to see. They got 70 orders and delivered in mid-September says Rushad. They have come up with their e-commerce website in October 2019, they provided offers and get in contact with multi-brand stores which sells bikes.

LightSpeed Startup’s some other electric bicycles 

The startup has some other electric bicycles to such as fury this is designed for the people who are well built and terrains like a dessert. This is for them who like bulkier bikes.
There other e-bikes like Whizz and Rush is meant for family and can be used by 12 to 65 years of age. The other e-bike is Bamboochi bicycle made from Bamboo.

e-bicycles conversion kits 

The startup e-bicycles on a single charge of 3 hours can run 35 km to 100 km. They also sell conversion kits to transform your bicycle. They have converted 30 bicycles to a startup called Kinisi.

The startup till now sold over 4219 e-bicycles and they have about 18 dealers in 14 cities. They have started working to manufacture electric cargo bicycles for last-mile deliveries which helps in reducing the carbon emission in the country. The company is planning to export their products and explore the European markets.
