Zimbabwe will soon import electric vehicles

To save fossil fuels and to reduce the global warming emissions in the country the government of Zimbabwe through the Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) says that it is planning to import battery electric vehicles. It plans to take advantage of abundant lithium deposits in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe will soon import electric vehicles

The CMED Managing Director, Mr Davison Mhaka said the initiative will definitely help the country to save the foreign currency for importing fuel. “Soon we are going to import vehicles which are electrically powered. As CMED we are under a government we are going to implement this initiative so that others will copy from us,” he said. This initiative will also help the country to reduce the carbon footprints he added.

Zimbabwe’s lithium deposits are second to none in Africa with deposits in Bikita, Goromonzi, and Kamativi. Many countries such as Germany, India and the Netherlands are planning to ban fossil fuels such as diesel, petrol or any other liquefied fuels.

As Zimbabwe has abundant lithium reserves than there is no need to import electric vehicles, the country itself can manufacture lithium-ion batteries which are used in almost all the electric vehicles. They can also take advantage of their lithium deposits and export lithium-ion battery packs or cells to the other countries who are in need of it.

However, it is a great initiative taken by the Zimbabwe government as electric vehicles can do a lot more good things to the environment and to mankind.
