It looks like the 450S’ battery pack will be smaller than the 450X’s because of the lower claimed range
On August 3rd, the Ather 450S is scheduled to be on sale in India for INR 1.3 lakhs (pre-showroom). As the company has touted many times, the low-cost electric scooter, which will have a smaller battery than the 3.7kWh unit on the 450X, will be less expensive than the 450X.
Despite being India’s leading electric car manufacturer, Ather is facing an uphill battle as it eagerly anticipates the release of its new Ather 450S electric scooter to the market. Even before the launch of the soon-to-be-launched electric scooter, it has already attracted more attention and fans than any of the existing products of the company so far.
- Bluetooth connection is still possible
- Same top speed as the 450X, but the engine loses power
Since the recent FAME II subsidy cuts have increased the price of the 450X electric scooter series, the Bangalore-based start-up decided that now would be a good time to launch their relatively inexpensive 450S model. Our knowledge of this product already tells us that it has the same top speed as the more expensive 450X, which is 90 km/h. The maximum power of this engine is still unknown, but it is assumed to be the same as that of the previous one, which produced 6.2 kW.
A teaser posted by Ather on social media implied that the 450S will still come with Bluetooth connectivity and a color dashboard, among other things. In terms of the display itself, we are not sure whether it’s an LCD or a TFT display. Our previous report suggested the Ather 450S may get proper passenger footpegs and simpler mirror bars as a way to make it more practical, indicating that it might move in a more practical direction.
Ather 450S: a brief overview
Not much is known about the 450S, but some significant details have come to light. Ather has announced that the top speed will be 90km/h, the same as the 450X, along with a teaser image of the handlebars. However, since the acceleration time details have not been disclosed, it is not known whether it is as fast as the 450X. On the 450S, the IDC range is 115 kilometers, so there is certainly a difference between the two models in terms of range. It is noteworthy that the range of the 450X is only 146 kilometers, which is 20% less than that of the 450X. As a result, the battery capacity of the S has been reduced to 3 kWh, which is a reduction from 3.7 kWh for the X. Considering the same efficiency could be achieved by Ather, the 450S would have an 80-kilometer range, if it could be done.
Due to the smaller battery, the 450S is priced at Rs 1.3 lakh (after FAME II subsidy, excluding showrooms). There isn’t much to see in the teaser images, but the mirror stem looks smoother than the 450X’s premium unit. This suggests that batteries may not be the only area where Ether cuts costs. The design patent also shows Ather working on passenger footpegs (the 450X has no traditional footpegs, just an expandable platform for the passenger to rest their feet on). Those folding footpegs aren’t on his 450X yet, so they could be on the 450S.
