The First Electric Polar Exploration Vehicle by Venturi Automobiles

First Electric Polar Exploration Vehicle

Electric Vehicles can be seen everywhere today, on roads, racing tracks and now it has moved forward with the challenge to provide the zero-emission means of transportation in the extreme cold (-40°C) temperature. The First Electric Polar Exploration Vehicle’s main objective is to give scientists a means of transportation which is clean and can sustain in their working environment without impacting negatively.

The Antarctica project is driven by Prince Albert II of Monaco, through his foundation, followed his three-weeks visit to Antarctica in 2009. The Venturi Antarctica was officially Presented at the Prince’s Palace In Monaco On Friday.

Diesel-powered-Current Means Of Transportation In Polar Regions

Polar regions are the first to get affected by the climatic changes. Their current means of transportation are diesel-powered that produces a high amount of pollution which can risks to the loss of species, threats to indigenous people can be commonly seen in these areas.

Prototype Of Antartica Electric Vehicle

The Venturi Automobiles developed a prototype for the Antarctica which is tested in the cold regions in Europe in the years 2013 and 2015. The company who developed race cars with the battery cells for their first version likewise it has come up with the second version with highly performed battery technology.

H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco said, “It is with great pride that I take this opportunity to discover the first polar exploration vehicle developed by Monegasque car manufacturer VENTURI, to whom I offer my thanks for having risen to this formidable challenge. The VENTURI Antarctica will be a significant asset for improving our understanding of the polar regions, the first to be impacted by the effects of climate disruption.”

The Venturi Antarctica Electric Vehicles specifications

  • Wheel-mounted caterpillar tracks
  • Power-2x60kW
  • Weighs- 2 tonnes
  • Carries-3 persons (luggage and equipment)
  • Range- approximately 45 km (28 miles)
  • Engine type- 2 x 60 kW continuous / 2 x 100 kW peak
  • Max.speed on caterpillar tracks- 20 to 25 km/h (12.5 to 15.5 mph)

Scientific research in polar regions, Antartica is not easy however the research is carried out in specific protected zones to avoid any kind of pollution to the environment.

“The task entrusted to us by the Sovereign Prince and his Foundation is a challenge which we were very honored to accept. We have worked with the most prominent experts in the scientific community to design a vehicle whose features very precisely meet all of their demands while being able to operate effectively in the extreme conditions found in Antarctica. Until now, researchers had to get around on foot in some areas, in order to avoid polluting them.

Now, with the VENTURI Antarctica, they will have access to an efficient, very maneuverable vehicle with excellent traction. Scientists will be able to carry out their research under optimum conditions, without polluting these sites where analysis requires molecular precision. We are proud to have developed technology that meets an essential and very specific need, at a time when environmental protection and efforts to combat climate change are critical challenges for our society.”, Gildo PASTOR, President of VENTURI Automobiles
