Swiggy & Zomato to shift to 10% of delivery fleet to EVs in 2021
Now if you are ordering your food online through Swiggy or Zomato you are contributing to the environment to be clean and eco-friendly. Yes, you heard it right, your food will be reaching to your homes or offices on an eco-friendly ride. India’s biggest food delivery startups Swiggy and Zomato are cleaning up their actions by choosing electric vehicles rides over regular petrol diesel vehicles. This came as companies all over the world face heat issues over carbon emissions and climate change.

The startups plan to shift to at least 10% of their delivery fleets mostly two-wheelers to electric in 2021. They are in talks with electric scooters and bike aggregators such as Zypp, Spinny and eBikeGo.
Earlier they have planned to hit this goal by March due to COVID the plan has been delayed and will happen in mostly second half o 2021. As the government’s push for the growth of electric vehicles and support infrastructure.
According to the JMK Research, the two-wheelers account for 70% of the 253 million vehicles on India’s roads. But there is no data about how many of them are in use for commercial purposes.
Electric vehicles delivery fleet in India is rapidly gaining momentum as many of the big players to startups stepping into the fleet operations. The eBikeGo, an Amritsar based electric two-wheeler rental startup is planning to expand its fleet. In that regard, it aims for pre-series fund of another $2 million or Rs 14 crore fund.
eBikeGo works with many different companies to transform the fleets to electric. The startup has successfully provided fleet solutions to the delivery companies such as Zomato, Delhivery, Ferns & Petals, Gostops, Big Basket, Ninja Cart amongst others.
Recently, eBikeGo has provided its e-bikes to Bengaluru based bike taxi startup Rapido which is looking to electrify 10% of its fleet by 2020.
Recently Amazon has also introduced its first custom electric delivery vehicle, designed and built in partnership with Rivian. Amazon last year had started a Climate Pledge which meant to be zero carbon across their businesses by 2040. 10,000 Amazon custom electric delivery vehicles will be on the road delivering to customers worldwide as early as 2022 and all 1,00,000 by 2030.
Back in 2019, Reliance Jio was also in the headlines that it is running trials of electric vehicle delivery with the collaboration of some of the startups and well settled major players. According to Vikram Misra, the vice president SCM (P&C) of Reliance Jio Infocomm made an announcement about the pilot launch of its new commerce venture in July 2019.
At the World EV Show event, Mr Misra talked about the expansion of its commerce venture to use electric vehicles in the delivery fleet and the company is looking forward to sustainable delivery options. Reliance Jio will have lakhs of delivery vehicles in its new commerce venture.
