Surat to get 150 E-buses under FAME II

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will get a subsidy to buy 150 electric buses in the phased manner during the next year. It has already received Rs 13.5 crore as the first instalment from the union government.




These buses are sanctioned under the Phase-II of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Scheme (FAME India Scheme) of Department of Heavy Industry (Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises) said an SMC official.

The civic body officials are expecting to run around 75 electric buses on Bus Rapid Transportation System (BRTS) routes in the city from Diwali onwards. This step will be a great effort for clean mobility in Public transportation system in Surat.

“Under the Union government’s scheme, Surat is entitled to give a further push to clean mobility, the Department of Heavy Industry has approved 150 electric buses. Of this, 20 per cent subsidy (Rs 13.5 crore) has been released now. The electric buses will help in reducing the carbon emissions and lessens the pollution as well said an SMC official. 




The Department has approved 150 electric buses to Surat under the FAME India scheme phase II. It had also invited the Expression of Interest (EoI) from more than million cities, smart cities, States and Union territories capitals and cities from special category states for submission of proposal for deploying the electric buses.

The government expects that these buses will run about 4 billion kilometres during the contract period which saves about 1.2 billion litres of fuel. This will also reduce 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emission.

“Surat has 102km BRTS corridor, the largest dedicated corridor in the country and 1.35 lakh commuters travel daily on BRTS buses. Apart from BRTS, on average, 1.4 lakh commuters travel on city buses daily,” said an official.
