Solid-state battery development by Hitachi Zosen

Hitachi Zosen a major Japanese industrial and engineering corporation has developed a solid-state battery. This new solid-state battery can be operated under a larger range of temperatures. The battery will soon be tested in industrial machinery and space.

This solid-state high-performance battery is unveiled at an exhibition in Tokyo. It has a capacity of 1,000 milliamp hours which is said to have roughly seven times as much as the Japanese company’s prior models. Its unique feature is that it can be operated even in the temperature range from 100 degrees to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

The battery assures a lower risk of fires due to its solid electrolyte and provides more enhanced energy efficiency than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries are considered to be the next-generation source of power.

There are many such companies that develop solid-state batteries, but they will be at high costs and their capacity is also limited. Keeping all that in mind the manufacturers are looking forward to doubling the capacity by 2025 and it has already started its production with a small prototype.

Hitachi Zosen announced an agreement with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to test its solid-state batteries in space. The battery will have camera equipment in Japan’s Kibo module on the ISS.

A South Korean multinational conglomerate Samsung Electronics has announced that it has developed a solid-state battery technology that provides a range of electric vehicles of 500 miles (800 km) on a single charge. The battery which is developed for electric vehicles has a life cycle of over 1,000 charges.
