Ola Electric Under Regulatory Fire for Compliance Failures
Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola Electric is under intense regulatory scrutiny across India as authorities crack down on the company’s failure to comply with trade certification requirements. A Bloomberg News investigation has revealed that more than 95% of Ola Electric’s showrooms lack the necessary trade certificates mandated under the country’s Motor Vehicles Act.
Ola Electric has rapidly expanded its physical presence, reaching over 4,000 locations since 2022. However, of the approximately 3,400 showrooms for which data was available, only a little over 100 were found to possess valid trade certificates. This certification is a legal prerequisite for displaying, selling, or providing test rides for unregistered two-wheelers.
The absence of these certificates has triggered a wave of enforcement actions by transport authorities in multiple states. Reports indicate that officials have conducted raids on Ola Electric showrooms, seized vehicles, and issued show-cause notices to the company.
Internal documents and government warning letters reviewed by Bloomberg News underscore the gravity of the situation. Some showrooms have reportedly been ordered to shut down until they obtain the required trade certification. These regulatory actions threaten to disrupt Ola Electric’s aggressive expansion strategy and could have significant financial and operational consequences for the company.
Ola Electric, which has positioned itself as a leader in India’s electric vehicle revolution, has yet to provide a comprehensive response to the crackdown. The company’s ability to address compliance gaps and navigate these regulatory challenges will be crucial in sustaining its market position amid mounting legal pressures.
This regulatory crisis comes at a critical time for India’s EV industry, where policymakers are working to balance rapid adoption with strict enforcement of existing laws. As authorities continue to tighten oversight, Ola Electric faces an uphill battle to regularize its showroom operations and restore compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act.
