Mr. & Mrs. Winnie Karunakaran and their Electric Conversion Kit
In 2016, Meladath Auto Components was formed by Rakesh Meladath Karunakaran and his wife Winnie Gangadharan, with an aim to produce aftermarket conversion kits for petrol scooters. The retrofittable conversion kits are able to convert any normal scooter into an electric-hybrid scooter. They power some portion of a normal scooter with a purely electric source and thereby eliminate any harmful emissions in the process.

Karunakaran is a former employee of Mahindra and Mahindra. He has a different perception on the ongoing transition to electric vehicles. He strongly points out that putting more EVs to use will not solve the problem of existing IC engine vehicles and it will only lead to an increased vehicle density on the roads.
Karunakaran realized and strongly believe that conversion of existing regular vehicles to the electric vehicles is the better way to achieve greener mobility and hence to curb the pollution. Therefore, he designed the e-conversion kit which allows a scooter to run on both electric and petrol mode separately. According to him, such a hybrid scooter can able to cover around 40 km completely on electric mode on a single charge.
Notably, a scooter need not require any fabrication or structural changes to fit this e-conversion kit. Karunakaran claims that it can be fitted to any scooter in nearly 30 seconds and the entire process is reversible without any welding or cutting.
That means, the scooter can be easily converted back to a pure petrol one by removing the electrification kit effortlessly from it.
The conversion kit can be fitted on almost all the scooters with 10-inch and 12-inch steel wheel. It is powered by a lithium-ion battery which can easily be charged at home.
Another noteworthy advantage of the kit over a pure electric offering is, the user can easily refuel petrol in such a vehicle if the battery runs out of charge. This is a huge boon as there is lack of proper electric charging network in India.
The kit can reduce the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions of a vehicle by as much as 15% during its run. Meladath has not yet commercialized the conversion kit. But he is in talks with dealerships across the country under a registered brand ‘Ezee Hybrid’. Meladath is also planning to come up with a pure electric scooter as a Made in India product.
