Top 5 Hybrid Cars in Indian market 2023

Whenever the world discovers new innovative products, the public will gradually become interested in them. In this transportation is also included and the vehicles we choose to travel will make the travel experience better. There are many types of vehicles and hybrids are among the notable ones.

So let me start with a few questions. Are you familiar with hybrid cars? Are you planning to buy a hybrid car in India?

Do you know which hybrid cars are the best and leading the market in 2023?

You do not need to worry about these. In this article we’ll explore the best hybrid cars available in the Indian market, providing key insights to help you make an informed decision. All the details are here, from energy efficiency to performance.

Let’s take a look at them one by one.

Hybrid Car

A hybrid car, also known as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), is a vehicle that combines an internal combustion engine (usually running on gasoline) with an electric motor and battery.

This hybrid system aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions compared to conventional gasoline vehicles.

The Different Types of Hybrid Cars

To simplify the concept, hybrid vehicles have the ability to generate electrical current, store it in a battery, and use it to drive later.

If you are thinking of switching to hybrid cars in India, here are some of the types you will encounter:

  1. Mild Hybrid Cars

A mild hybrid vehicle uses an electrical system to assist the internal combustion engine.

The battery charging that powers the motor supports idle start/stop and meets low torque demands.

By reducing the load on the engine, these systems significantly reduce fuel consumption. Maruti Suzuki has introduced mild hybrid vehicles in India with its “SHVS” intelligent hybrid vehicle system, which Mahindra and MG Motors have also adopted.

  1. Strong Hybrid Cars

Powerful hybrid cars that combine both an electric motor and a combustion engine while driving.

With a larger capacity battery than a mild hybrid vehicle, a powerful hybrid vehicle can run entirely on electricity.

The motor charges the battery to provide more power at higher speeds.

  1. Plug-in Hybrid Cars

Plug-in hybrid systems have larger batteries and allow the driver to charge them by plugging them into a charger.

This hybrid vehicle allows an extended range of operation in electric-only mode compared to powerful hybrid vehicles.

The motor charges the battery and continues to extend the range or provide more power to the vehicle at higher speeds.

List of the Best Hybrid Cars in India

1. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

The Grand Vitara is offered in two hybrid variants, the SHVS mild hybrid and the intelligent electric hybrid (IEH).

The IEH model is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine powered by an electric motor, delivering fuel efficiency up to 27 km/l.

Grand Vitara IEH can run entirely on electricity, producing no emissions.

The powerful hybrid system delivers 115.56 PS of power and 122 Nm of torque, delivering outstanding performance while maintaining fuel efficiency.

The mild hybrid SHVS is powered by a 1.5-liter K-series engine paired with a 6-speed AT and a 5-speed MT transmission. The mild hybrid Grand Vitara produces 103 hp and 136 Nm of torque, delivering a claimed range of up to 21.11 km/l.

  1. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

A mild hybrid system is available on the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, as well as a strong hybrid system.

The mild hybrid system supports the start-stop function on the 1.5L engine, which can be combined with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

On the other hand, the powerful hybrid system offers both electric-only capabilities and synergy when combined with the 1.5L petrol engine, achieving an impressive 27.97 km/l range.

The powerful hybrid variant also includes an e-CVT transmission to seamlessly manage the energy transition between the electric system and the petrol engine.

  1. MG Hector

It stands out as one of the most accessible hybrid vehicles among the collection as it played a major role in introducing MG Motors to the Indian market.

The MG Hector Hybrid is equipped with a mild hybrid powertrain, including a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor, and a 48V battery.

The battery is recharged by regenerative braking, increasing gasoline consumption by 1.65 km/l, reaching an impressive 17.41 km/l.

Regarding the powertrain, the MG Hector hybrid is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission.

4. Toyota Vellfire

The Toyota Vellfire emerges as a formidable rival to the Mercedes-Benz V-Class thanks to its use of advanced gasoline-electric hybrid technology through a series hybrid system.

The Vellfire’s powertrain consists of a 2.5L petrol engine combined with an electric motor, producing a combined capacity of 115 horsepower and 198 Nm of torque.

Furthermore, it achieves impressive fuel economy of up to 16.35 km/l.

To match its considerable size and weight, the Vellfire combines front and rear electric motors, providing the same performance as a four-wheel-drive hybrid MUV.

Similar to the Camry Hybrid, the Vellfire is capable of running entirely on electric power at lower speeds in urban environments.

  1. Honda City eHEV

Honda City eHEV uses a powerful self-charging hybrid system, producing a combined capacity of 126 horsepower and achieving fuel economy of 26.5 km / l.

It combines a traction motor with an AC synchronous permanent magnet, resulting in 109 PS and 253 Nm of torque, and an i-VTEC petrol engine with 1.5L displacement.

In hybrid mode, the gasoline engine acts as a generator to power the wheels, while EV mode enables a quiet, zero-emissions driving experience.

Finally, a few thoughts

Which hybrid car will you choose now to make your dream trip a reality and make it a memorable one? These are just some of the top hybrid cars available on the Indian market at the moment. It is expected that there will be more features and a better version and model in the future. Therefore, it is important to take time to think and choose wisely.
