EVs sold and registered in Uttar Pradesh between October 14, 2022 and October 13, 2025 will be tax-free

Uttar Pradesh’s exemption complements the subsidy provided by the Central government.

Earlier this week, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a long-awaited Government Order (GO) paving the way for the purchase of electric vehicles in the state to be exempted from road tax and registration fees. In October last year, the government announced its directive on electric vehicle manufacturing and mobility for the year 2022, five months after it announced the directive.

It is worth noting here that the Uttar Pradesh government exemption is in addition to the subsidies given by the central government towards the purchase of electric vehicles.

The government has announced that it will implement a number of relief measures that will reduce the cost of two-wheelers by Rs.15,000 to Rs.20,000 and up to Rs 1 lakh for passenger cars.

From 14th October 2022 to 13th October 2025, 100% tax exemption will be granted here for Electric Vehicles (EV) sold and registered in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the government spokesperson, the Electric Vehicles Directive announced on 14 October 2022 will offer 100% refunds for EVs sold and registered during the fourth and fifth years of its implementation.

In addition, the importance of electric vehicles was clarified. Thus, EVs are vehicles with electric motors powered by batteries, ultra-capacitors, or fuel cells. It includes all 2-, 3-, and 4-wheel hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). From 14 October 2022 to date, 3,997 electric vehicle owners in Agra have been charged taxes and registration fees. A total of 11,340 electric vehicles have been registered, of which 3,997 have been purchased since 14 October 2022. Among them are 437 electric rickshaws, 30 passenger cars, and the rest are two-wheeled vehicles (EVs).

In addition, the state government plans to provide advance payments to civil servants in order to encourage them to purchase electric vehicles. As a result of these measures, Uttar Pradesh is being encouraged to use electric vehicles in order to reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainable mobility in the state.
