Everything about Hybrid electric vehicles

The term “Hybrid” indicates a combination of two or more. Hybrid vehicles are not a complete success but also not a total failure. Toyota Prius is a perfect example of an early mass-production hybrid vehicle. Hybrid vehicles are practical in the early 2000 because they are fuel-efficient and fewer emission vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers were constantly trying to make the use of electric motors as a replacement in a situation where IC engines lose more fuel. Let’s try to know everything about hybrid electric vehicles.

History

Even though Prius is the first hybrid electric on your mind, a working prototype of hybrid is ahead of the term “hybrid car”. In 1889, a patent application filing from William H.Patton for a gasoline-electric hybrid rail-car propulsion system is proof of the first hybrid.  A gasoline engine drove a generator that served to charge a lead-acid battery in parallel with the traction motors. Porsche’s founder Ferdinand Porsche was also one of the first contribute development of Hybrid electric vehicles.

Types of Hybrid electric vehicles

Hybrid electric vehicles can be classified into two types.

HEVs

The first type of hybrid electric vehicles is basic. They run by switching between IC engines and electric motors to increase fuel efficiency. The vehicle runs predominantly on petrol and electric motor is used in low-speed operations. The batteries in the vehicle recharge only by the regenerative braking in the vehicle.

PHEVs

PHEV stands for plugin hybrid electric vehicles. In PHEV the vehicle can travel a particular distance with electric power. The battery will recharge by Plug-in and regenerative braking. A driver can choose between IC or electric motor to drive. In PHEV supercars the purpose of the electric motor is only for acceleration and the peak performance is achieved by an IC engine. In other mass-produced PHEVs reasonable range is available in the vehicle.

Example: Range rover P400e plugin hybrid

Conclusion

Hybrid vehicles are practical until the quick battery charging EVs are mass-produced. They are a considerable option for drivers with range anxiety and environmental consciousness.
