Next year, Tesla will open a manufacturing facility in Gujarat, India. According to media reports, negotiations for the establishment of the first manufacturing unit of the electric vehicle maker in India are nearing completion. An announcement regarding the Tesla manufacturing facility in Gujarat is likely to take place at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024, as reported in the Ahmedabad Mirror.
In the business environment, Gujarat has long been considered a strategic location. Several automakers already have manufacturing facilities in the state, including Maruti Suzuki, among others. A report in the Ahmedabad Mirror suggests that the Tesla manufacturing plant may be located in Sanand, Becharaji, or Dholera.
As of this writing, neither the EV maker nor the state government has made any official announcements concerning this issue. Rushikesh Patel, the Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson, expressed optimism regarding Elon Musk’s investment in the state.
The Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel noted a parallel between Gujarat’s awareness and alignment with Tesla’s overall goals during Thursday’s Cabinet briefing.
The minister also highlighted the fact that the government is actively negotiating with the EV maker to finalize the terms of the deal regarding the establishment of the manufacturing facility in Gujarat.
According to media reports, Gujarat has emerged as a top destination for Tesla to locate a manufacturing plant not merely due to state government policies, but also due to its proximity to ports that enable Tesla to export its products. Due to their proximity to the Kandla-Mundra port in Gujarat, the EV maker can increase exports from India to locations like Sanand.
