DHL Freight & Volvo Trucks partners to speed up transition to greener transportation
One of the leading road freight providers in Europe, DHL Freight and Volvo Trucks have partnered to provide and speed-up eco-friendly transitions for longer distances. Usually, electric trucks are being used for shorter distances such as cities and urban areas but now DHL Freight and Volvo Trucks have taken an initiative a project focusing on longer distance heavy transports. Both the companies are working closely to reduce the carbon footprints from the environment. Let us now look in detail at DHL Freight & Volvo Trucks partners for fossil-free emission transportation.
Project facts
- The DHL-Volvo project will start in the first quarter of 2021 and is part of REEL, an initiative run by Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova to promote the transition to an electrified freight transport system.
- The route is between the cities of Gothenburg and Jönköping in Sweden, which is a distance of 150 km one way.
- Charging will be done at DHL in Jönköping and the Volvo Truck Center in Gothenburg.
The initiative includes the first pilot tests of a fully electric Volvo FH truck which weighs 60 tons. From March onwards the truck will start its operations between the two terminals in Sweden for a distance of 150 km. This tests and trials will help the companies to get experience about the setup and operations of enough charging infrastructure and to check load weight, distance, etc.
Uwe Brinks, CEO at DHL Freight says that our Group’s CO2 efficiency has improved by 35% when compared to 2007. He says the cooperation with Volvo Trucks will helps us in achieving our ambitious environmental goals in the road freight sector.
Roger Alm, President at Volvo Trucks says We have a longstanding relationship with DHL and their global expertise in logistics will helps us to study the progress with the technology shift.
The Volvo FL Electric and Volvo FE Electric trucks for city commutes and DHL supply has been already started the operations of Volvo FL Electric in London.
“Our commitment is that our entire truck sales range will be fossil-free by 2040 at the latest,” concludes Roger Alm. Volvo Trucks started sales of the VNR Electric in North America and will start in Europe as well.
