Amazon orders 1,800 Mercedes Benz electric vans for deliveries in Europe

A multinational technology company has made an announcement that it has ordered 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz for its European delivery fleet. This move is a part of the online retailer plan to run a carbon-neutral business by 2040.

Most of the electric vehicles from Daimler AG’s car and vans division will be in service this year. It has ordered 1,200 Mercedes-Benz larger eSprinter models and midsize eVitos 600.

Till now, it is the biggest order for Mercedes Benz for electric vehicles to date which includes 800 vans for Germany and 500 for the United Kingdom. Amazon’s recent order for 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian Automotive LLC, a startup it has invested in. The Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement that the Daimler agreement was part of retailers “journey to build sustainable transportation fleet in the world.”

Amazon last year had started a Climate Pledge which meant to be zero carbon across their businesses by 2040 and Mercedes Benz have joined this initiative. Amazon has become the biggest customer of the Mercedes non-electric Sprinter vans securing 20,000 vehicles for delivery contractors.

“Moving forward, we are prioritizing the addition of electric vehicles,” Ross Rachey, Amazon’s director of the global fleet and products for last-mile delivery. There are some other companies also who are pushing for more electric fleets such as in January United Parcel Service Inc ordered 10,000 delivery trucks from UK-based Arrival Ltd.

Daimler competitors like Ford Motor and General Motors Co are also working on bringing electric vans to market. Ford Motor is planning an all-electric version of its Transit van in North America in 2022 and General Motors to start electric van in late 2021.
