VinFast India Onboards First 200 Employees at Tamil Nadu EV Plant; Plans to Scale Workforce to 3,500 in Five Years

VinFast India, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s electric vehicle (EV) giant VinFast Auto, has marked a significant milestone in its Indian operations by onboarding its first cohort of 200 local professionals at its upcoming EV manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu.
The onboarding comes ahead of the official inauguration of the factory, which is expected to become a key pillar in VinFast’s global expansion strategy. The plant will focus on manufacturing electric vehicles specifically designed for the Indian market and select export destinations. The company’s early investment in skilled manpower signals a strong commitment to long-term operations and growth in India’s rapidly evolving EV landscape.
VinFast India confirmed that it will gradually ramp up hiring, with plans to scale its workforce to around 3,500 employees over the next five years. The roles will span across various departments, including manufacturing, engineering, design, quality control, and administration. The current batch of 200 professionals includes a mix of experienced specialists and young talent who are undergoing intensive training to align with VinFast’s global standards of electric mobility innovation.
Speaking on the occasion, a VinFast India spokesperson stated:
“India is a key market in VinFast’s global strategy. Our factory in Tamil Nadu represents not only our investment in infrastructure but also in people. We are excited to welcome the first group of talented professionals who will drive our vision of sustainable, smart mobility for India and beyond.”
VinFast announced its entry into the Indian market in early 2024 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to set up an integrated EV manufacturing facility. The company committed to investing around $500 million (approx. ₹4,000 crore) in the first phase of development. The factory, once fully operational, is expected to have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 EVs.
Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi region was chosen for its strategic location, availability of port access for exports, and the state’s EV-friendly industrial policy. This move aligns with Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a leading EV manufacturing hub in India.
VinFast’s entry into India adds to the increasing number of global EV players tapping into the world’s third-largest automobile market, which is currently undergoing a strong push toward electrification. With competitive products, strategic local hiring, and policy support, VinFast is positioning itself to compete with homegrown EV manufacturers and global rivals alike.
The factory is expected to begin trial production in 2025, with full-scale manufacturing operations expected by 2026. In addition to manufacturing, VinFast has also revealed plans to establish an R&D center, a battery manufacturing unit, and a localized supply chain ecosystem to support its Indian ambitions.
This bold move by VinFast is likely to create significant employment opportunities, promote technology transfer, and foster a competitive EV ecosystem in India’s southern region. As the company builds its team from the ground up, all eyes are on how this Vietnamese EV major will reshape the Indian electric mobility space.
