Telangana Joins the EV Revolution: Road Tax and Registration Fees Waived
In a significant move to promote sustainable transportation and reduce air pollution, the Telangana government has announced a complete waiver of road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles (EVs). This exemption will be valid until December 31, 2026, regardless of the number of vehicles registered.
The decision was announced by Ponnam Prabhakar, the State Minister for Transport and BC Welfare, on November 17, 2024. The move aims to encourage the adoption of EVs in the state and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
This exemption applies to all types of electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and commercial vehicles. The Telangana government hopes that this incentive will make EVs more affordable and accessible to the general public, thereby boosting their sales and usage.
Telangana’s decision aligns with the growing trend of states across India offering incentives to promote EV adoption. Several other states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, have already implemented similar measures to encourage the shift towards cleaner and greener transportation.
The waiver of road tax and registration fees is expected to have a positive impact on the EV ecosystem in Telangana. It will not only stimulate demand for EVs but also encourage the development of charging infrastructure and related services.
This move by the Telangana government is a welcome step towards a sustainable future. By providing incentives for EV adoption, the state is taking proactive measures to address air pollution and climate change.
