Upcoming rival of Citroen eC3 and MG Comet EV

As usual, the EV segment talks about exciting and healthy rivalries, and customers are nervous about choosing the most suitable EV. Tata Motors wants to revitalize its electric vehicle portfolio as new competitors emerge in the entry-level electric vehicle segment. The strategy of launching EV versions of existing popular ICE models has paid off well for the company. Following Nexon, Tiago, and Tigor, Tata Punch gets an EV version.

At launch, Punch Electric will compete with vehicles such as the Citroen eC3 and the recently launched MG Comet EV. And this upcoming competitor was recently spotted on a truck and the spy shots are spreading like wildfire.

Tata’s primary volume generators are Nexon and Punch. Punch recently reached the 200,000-production milestone while Nexon surpassed its 500,000-production milestone. With the Punch growing in popularity, it seems like the appropriate time to introduce an electric version. CNG options will be added soon.

Punch Electric was found on a tow truck. The snug-fitting camouflage reveals that the Punch EV shares the same appearance profile as its ICE-based version. The aluminum wheels are also the same as the ICE Punch.

The Punch Electric’s charging port is likely in the same location as the ICE version’s gas cap, so no front-end modifications are required. So did the Nexon EV and the Tiago EV. This setup is believed to reduce the number of modifications required to convert an internal combustion engine vehicle to an electric vehicle.

Punch Electric may add new features. For example, our test mule is equipped with rear disc brakes. By comparison, the ICE Punch has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. A rotating knob can be seen inside, suggesting an electronic parking brake. This feature is already available in the Nexon EV Max. The electronic parking brake operates automatically, but can also be manually activated and deactivated.

As far as other functions are concerned, they seem to be identical to those found in the ICE Punch. The electric version will have a floating 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, expected to come from Harman, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features similar to the ICE Punch include a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a flat-bottom steering wheel and premium upholstery.

Punch Electric’s safety features are nearly identical to its ICE brothers. Punch’s key safety features include a reversing camera, fog lights with a dimming function, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, ABS and EBD with brake sway control, and a heated rear window.

There are no official figures, but the Punch Electric may have a 300km range. For reference, the Tiago EV comes in two variants, one with a range of 250 km and the other with a range of 315 km. The recently launched MG Comet EV has a range of 230 km, while the Citroën eC3 has a range of 320 km. The Punch Electric will be equipped with Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The battery could be similar to the Tiago EV.
