Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has announced its plans to launch electric two-wheelers in India next year. The business also intends to produce one million EVs annually by the year 2030.

Although the firm is one of the last large scale two-wheeler producers to join the EV roadmap for the Indian market, it hopes to do it in a fashionable manner. Next year, Honda will introduce two electric scooters in India, one of which will be an upgraded Activa.

Honda’s plans for the impending launch of the e-scooters

The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer is creating EVs from the bottom up and will use a brand-new platform called “Platform-E.” It will provide the basis for a number of electric two-wheelers, including variants with fixed and interchangeable batteries. Honda aims to provide 10 Electric scooters in its lineup over the next five years. However, the firm didn’t explain it in detail.

The first electric product from the business will be a mid-range model with a fixed battery pack. It will debut in India in March 2024 and be based on Honda’s best-selling petrol scooter, the Activa. Secondly, the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: technology-based electric scooter with a swappable battery system will come and is anticipated to hit the market by September of the coming year.

Features of the electric two-wheelers

Honda has declared that the batteries, PCU, and even the motor would be designed and built internally for use in its electric vehicles. In terms of infrastructure for charging, The automobile company will install battery-swapping facilities at gas stations, metro stations, and its 6,000+ point of contacts across the nation. Several of its service centres will eventually become Workshop ‘E’ to serve EV clients exclusively.

Here is what the CEO of HMSI said

Atsushi Ogata, Managing Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HMSI, while speaking at the event, stated, “In line with Honda’s global direction – to increase electric scooter and Fuel Cell Vehicle unit sales ratio to 100% by 2040, we will continue to improve the efficiency of ICE engines with introduction of Flex fuel engine and follow government direction for alternate fuels while expanding electrification of models and ecosystem.”

In addition, he said, “On the EV front, we are committed to build India’s best EV Business structure. With our EV roadmap, now in the execution phase, we are taking substantial steps towards creating exclusive infrastructure for manufacturing diverse range of captivating electric vehicles. Parallelly, we are also investing in the development of EV technologies, charging infrastructure and aftersales services”.

Future of Honda’s EV

Honda has unveiled its plan to satisfy the demand for EV production in accordance with its aggressive product growth goals. In its Narsapura factory in Karnataka, the corporation will build Factory ‘E,’ a specialised manufacturing facility.  The factory will exclusively produce electric vehicles and by 2030, the firm hopes to build one million electrified vehicles annually in India.
