Centre offers Rs 800 crores to OMCs for establishing EV charging stations

With the help of a Rs 800 crore subsidy transfer from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, India’s public sector oil-marketing companies (OMCs) will shortly install 7,432 EV charging stations.

The Centre on Monday approved Rs 800 crore under Faster Adoption and Manufacture of (Hybrid &) Electric vehicles (FAME II) to three public sector undertaking OMCs for establishng 7,432 public fast-charging stations across the nation.

The OMCs include Indian Oil Corporation (IndianOil), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL).

In the process of promoting green mobility, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has released 70 percent (Rs. 560 crore) of the sanctioned amount to the mentioned three OMCs in the first installment. This will be helpful for installation and commissioning of the upstream infrastructure and charging technology for public EV charging stations at the appropriate retail outlets.

Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries, referred to the action as India’s commitment to a clean, green future and said that with the addition of 7,432 public fast-charging stations, the nation’s total installed charging capacity will surpass 14,000 units.

Pandey also added, “These fast-charging stations will be set up in all the metros, million-plus cities, smart cities notified by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, cities of hilly states, highways and expressways across the country.”

In addition, he asserted, “Our ministry, along with Ministries of Petroleum, Power, and Highways are jointly working towards implementation of FAME India. We are working towards setting up charging stations at about 22,000 petrol pumps across the country.”

Ministry of Heavy Industries’ subsidie

The installation of the charging stations will most probably finish by 2024. These new stations will complement the already existing 6,586 public EV charging stations in India, per official data.

The building of charging infrastructure would cost Rs 1,000 crore under FAME India Phase II.
In 68 cities across 25 states and the Union Territory, the ministry has authorised 2,877 EV charging points. In addition, Phase II of FAME India has approved 1,576 charging stations spread over 16 motorways and nine motorways.

Due to the ministry’s policy of only offering subsidies for EV supply equipment, it was only possible for the ministry to spend roughly 150 crore rupees of the 1,000 crore rupees allotted for supporting charging infrastructure.

As a result of the change, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has now authorised financial assistance for setting up upstream infrastructure (such as distribution transformers, low tension/high tension cables, alternative current distribution boxes, circuit breakers/isolators, protection equipment, tubular or plain cement concrete mounting structures, etc.).
