UT Administration proposes incentives for electric vehicles

To promote the adoption of electric vehicles the UT Administration has prepared a draft of financial incentives for the purchasers of e-vehicles. The Chandigarh Renewal Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (Crest) has also proposed to waive off the registration fees for electric vehicles.

The road tax in Chandigarh has already been waived off for electric vehicles till 2023. The incentives will be provided to the electric vehicles which cost less than Rs 15 lakh and the high-end electric vehicles costing more than 15 lakhs will not be eligible for the incentives.

According to the proposed plan, the purchase of the first 1,000 electric four-wheelers will get Rs 5,000 incentives per kWh of battery capacity. The first 2,000 electric two-wheelers per kWh of battery capacity will receive Rs 5,000 incentive and the electric three-wheelers, including e-rickshaws, e-carts, e-autos will get Rs 30,000 of incentives. The electric three-wheeler incentives will be given on the conditions such as the models can be lead-acid batteries and swappable models and the battery will not be sold with the vehicle.

A source said, “all these vehicles should be certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Besides this, it is proposed that the commercial vehicles, including two-wheelers attached with food delivery companies, courier services along with all cab services including Ola, Uber, should be electric by March 31, 2024. Though the road tax for the e-vehicle is already waived off by the UT transport department till 2023, free registration of these vehicles is also proposed till 2023.”

The incentives will be provided to the electric vehicles which cost less than Rs 15 lakh and the high-end electric vehicles costing more than 15 lakhs will not be eligible for the incentives. However, the final decision is yet to be made and will be discussed with the highest level with the Adviser Dharam Pal and Administrator V P Singh Badnore.

It is also looking to promote electric vehicles charging infrastructure, 48 charging stations at nine points which include Sukhna Lake, Sector 8 market, Sector 9, Ramdarbar and Mani Majra. A tender has been also issued to run charging stations and at least 40 electric buses are expected to ply in the city by October.
