NTPC issues tender for hydrogen fuel cell-based pilot projects

NTPC India’s leading power generator has issued a tender an expression of interest (EoI) for hydrogen fuel cell-based pilot projects. NTPC is looking out to further strengthen its footprint in clean and green fuel. The bids last date of submission is July 10, 2021, and will open on July 10. Let us know more about NTPC issues tender details.

The State-run company plans these bids for setting up electrolyzers in Delhi and Leh to fuel zero-emission vehicles with green hydrogen. NTPC said in a statement “Through the projects, NTPC is looking to further strengthen its footprint in green and clean fuel. NTPC will collaborate for implementation and further commercialization of the projects.” It wants to explore the practicality of replacing the generators with hydrogen-based fuel cell electrolyzer systems in the applications and also to create products and solutions that are an alternative to diesel generators.

It has also planned for a fuel cell-based backup power system and a microgrid with hydrogen production using an electrolyzer. This pilot projects will be located at NTPC premises in Noida, Uttar Pradesh and its guest house will be in Simhadri, near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to test new hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric vehicles to reduce the carbon footprint in the environment. NTPC is planning to procure such vehicles for pilot projects. International automakers like Toyota and Hyundai motor, and India’s Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, KPIT technologies have shown interest in the initiative.

Working of Fuel cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV)

Unlike the battery-powered electric vehicles which use the battery pack as the main fuel, these FCEV’s uses battery packs only to start and store the energy generated from the regenerative braking of a vehicle. Hydrogen is used as the main fuel in FCEV’s so it does not require plug-in charging for battery packs but they need refilling of hydrogen fuel.
