Ample’s battery swapping stations charge EVs in 10 minutes 

Ample a California based startup is testing for battery swapping stations in California’s Bay Area for fleet drivers. With its specially built modular battery modules and packs (swapping system), it can charge the vehicles in just 10 minutes. Let us see in detail about Ample’s battery swapping stations.

After seven years of development work, Ample is ready to test and release a battery-swapping system with swapping stations and modular battery architecture. 

The company is working with 5 automakers to build vehicles that will have battery swapping structures. Its charging technology will be benefited mostly the fleets and its first customers will be Uber drivers. 

The station’s size is said to have two parking spots and tall enough to handle large SUVs and the coming wave of electric trucks. They are fully automated which uses a combination of both computer vision and secure wireless communication with the vehicle.  

The Ample station can identify the exact location of each battery module to be swapped. Its unique feature is that it can accommodate any make, design, model or driving profile.

Ample stations don’t require construction with just a small footprint equivalent to two parking spots, which can be located at gas stations, grocery stores, or the side of the road. The startup is also working with Uber on battery swapping for a fleet of Nissan Leafs in San Francisco.

The company says with fast installation, a whole city can be ready for EVs in weeks when it used to take months or even years.

However, the automakers must build their electric vehicles with battery swapping options so that they can attract more people to adopt electric vehicles removing the charging and range anxieties.
