Safety Reminders When Riding Your Electric Scooter

Riding an Electric Scooter for daily commutes or personal travel has become a popular alternative for many people, especially in urban cities across the world. It has risen in popularity in the past decade as electric scooters have proven that it’s more than just a scooter for teens. It’s also a great alternative for young professionals and individuals who need a fast and convenient alternative mode of transport.

Safety Reminders When Riding

Startups have even tapped on this potential offering ride-sharing services to the public to promote e-scooters. E-scooter ride-sharing company Lime even offers subscriptions to reduce the cost for riders. This makes electric scooters more accessible and affordable for locals.

However, despite the potential of electric scooters, some are still concerned about its safety. In fact, a study found that the most common e-scooter injuries were due to falls. However, this can’t be blamed entirely on electric scooters. After all, the riders are the one driving these mobile vehicles.

For this reason, preparing yourself to ride e-scooters and avoiding harm through safe riding etiquette will prevent you from any unwanted accidents. With this, here are a few electric scooter safety tips that you should keep in mind.

Wear proper safety gear

Electric Scooter safety starts with wearing the proper gear. After all, there will always be factors that you can’t control while on the road. To prevent any serious injuries, always be dressed in the proper safety gear.

Out of all the safety equipment, wearing a helmet is the most vital. Unfortunately, only 4.8% of e-scooter riders who got injured wore helmets according to ERideHero. Wearing helmets and other proper safety gear should be a norm whether you’re riding your electric scooter or a ride-sharing e-scooter. Make sure to wear a helmet with a visor to prevent bugs from getting in your face, and avoid losing your focus on the road.

Aside from a helmet, make sure you wear the following electric scooter safety gear: knee and elbow pads, gloves, closed shoes, and reflectors. Gloves closed shoes, and safety pads will prevent you from scraping or injuring your hands and feet if ever you fall. When riding at night, reflectors will help increase your visibility on the road.

Investing in quality and complete safety gear will ensure that you have a fun and safe commute or travel on urban roads.

Check your electric scooter’s condition before riding

Before you ride and hit the road, make sure to check if your Electric Scooter is in good condition. After all, it’s still a vehicle that requires maintenance and proper care. Ideally, you would want to conduct regular inspections on your unit before and after you ride.

Before heading out, check the following to avoid any inconveniences or accidents on the road:

  • Check if your e-scooter has the right tire pressure.
  • See if you have enough battery for the trip.
  • Check if the stem latch is locked.
  • Make sure the charging ports and rubber caps are closed.
  • Test your lights, brakes, and accelerators.

If you use your unit regularly, it’s highly recommended to have a weekly inspection for any loose screws or bolts and to check if your brake discs are not bent.

Road Safety Day-how safe is an electric vehicle?

For those who are driving ride-sharing electric scooters, be sure to still check on the scooter before using it, and do some test runs before you go on the road. Making sure that your Electric Scooter is in top condition will lessen the risks for you while riding.

Be alert and focused at all times

When it comes to Electric Scooter vs bike safety, both have its pros and cons. However, if the rider loses focus while riding either vehicle, then the rider increases the possibility of running into danger. After all, if you don’t pay attention to the road and your surroundings, you could end up hitting something or someone.

Always watch out and follow road and traffic signs. Most countries only allow e-scooters on sidewalks and other footpaths, so follow traffic signs and your country’s e-scooter regulations to avoid penalties and any safety risks. Also, always watch out for pedestrians, especially if you’re riding on sidewalks.

Remember that you’re riding on small wheels with less suspension, so a small bump can easily steer you off your tracks, make you lose balance, and fall. Depending on where and how you fall, it could result in serious injuries, especially if you’re not wearing proper safety gear. So, keep your attention on the road and observe your surroundings to avoid hurting yourself and others.

Avoid risky paths and bad weather

Lastly, don’t ride your electric scooters during bad weather or on risky roads. Although there are heavy-duty electric scooters that are built for strong weather, it’s still best to avoid driving through rain. Moreover, unless your e-scooter is built for off-road travel, don’t ride your e-scooter on rough terrains such as hills or rocky paths. It will not only risk you falling but also damage your e-scooter.

To increase your safety, only ride on flat paths or pavements during good weather. This way, you can also enjoy driving around the city without any hassle.

Prevent accidents by putting safety first

In the end, it all comes down to how you ride your electric scooter on the road. Don’t blame it on the electric scooter if you are actually a reckless driver.

As more micro-mobile transportation develops in the future, urban riders must not forget that their safety still lies in their road etiquette. To increase your safety on the road, invest in safety gears regardless of what vehicle you’re riding. For example, if you’re riding a hoverboard, you may want to invest in a self-balancing electric scooter safety handle to improve your balance and safety while riding.

Knowledge of safe driving and mindfulness for others on the road will help keep us all safe while travelling. So, be sure to keep the tips above in mind to have a safe and fun e-scooter riding experience.
