Tamil Nadu towards achieving big goals to promote the growth of EV adoption  

Tamil Nadu government has informed the National Green Tribunal that it will set up electric vehicle charging stations in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli, and provide charging points in government office parking slots. The charging stations will also be set up on NHAI and State Highways and EV related and charging infrastructure manufacturing industries in the State will provide a 100% exemption on electricity tax till December 31, 2025. To set up this kind of industries there will also stamp duty exemption given on the purchase of the electric vehicles. The government said while submitting its reply in a case at the NGT.

The government submitted its plans to promote the conversion of all auto-rickshaws to electric vehicles in the 6 major cities within the next 10 years and extend it to other cities and towns gradually. It supports the conversion of all taxis in these 6 cities into EVs and will introduce 1,000 electric buses every year.

It also submitted the private operators and educational institutions are encouraged for the transition. The government aims to attract ₹50,000 crore investment in EV manufacturing, offering charging infrastructure, shared mobility, recycle and reuse batteries and disposal of the used batteries in an eco-friendly manner.

“At present, after the announcement of the e-vehicle policy, many new companies have started manufacturing and dealing with EVs by which the public have started to know the importance and by which they are sure that only EVs will be the future automobiles on the roads,” it further said.

Tamil Nadu becomes the first state to manufacture e-cars in India

It also said that the Indian Oil Corporation has come up with a new project making available Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) in Salem and Namakkal districts for use in automobiles.

“Being a green gas and also environment friendly, it promotes rural economy and development contributing to a nation’s growth. Permission will be granted for conversion of petrol-driven vehicles to CBG,” the government said.

Recently the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami flagged off 13 types of solar and electric powered autos which will be operated by women as part of the women empowerment and environmental protection.

This project is the result of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s efforts on fetching investments to Tamil Nadu and to create job opportunities for youth. CM Palaniswami signed a memorandum of understanding with M Auto at Dubai and offered his governments support by providing charging stations, manufacturing units and other things.

The project holds the investment of about ₹100 crores which creates employment opportunities to 5,000 employees. The autos are manufactured by M Auto Electric Mobility which is equipped with GPS, CCTV cameras, panic button and tabs and can be used for various purposes. Its drivers will be mostly women.

Apart from this, the CM trip to UK and US, signed MoUs with 41 companies with an investment of ₹8,835 crores totally which creates new jobs for over 35,520 persons.

Tamil Nadu to set up EV park to build production ecosystem

Recently the Tamil Nadu government has announced that it is planning to establish an exclusive park to promote electric vehicles production ecosystem in the state. This park will be spread across 300 acres of land and will include incentives like 100 per cent GST reimbursement and 50 per cent capital subsidy.

This plan is the part of its bid to attract Rs 50,000 crore investment in the EV sector. Through this plan, the State aims to make the State as the hub of electric vehicles and component manufacturing units including battery and charging infrastructure.

Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2019

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced the Electric Vehicle Policy 2019. According to that policy, all-electric vehicles will be exempted from Motor Vehicles Tax till 2022 and manufacturers will get incentives on investment, land cost and 100% exemptions from state goods and Services Tax (SGST), land registration fees tax and electricity tax.

It is part of the State’s Electric Vehicle Policy it attracts the investment of Rs 50,000 crore and by this around 150,000 new employment opportunities will be created in the new ecosystem.

Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2019

As per the EV Policy, the State Government will introduce 100 per cent motor vehicle tax exemption for all-electric vehicles including two-wheelers, cars, auto-rickshaws, buses and light goods carriers till 31 December 2022. Besides this, Three-wheeler goods, e-carriers as well as electric light goods carriers will not be asked for a permit.

Introduction of 2000 Electric buses 

Earlier in last year, the TN government had made an announcement that it will introduce 2000 Electric buses. During the financial year, the government presented the budget stating that it would introduce 10,000 BS-VI compliant buses and 2,000 electric buses. In the first phase, they will introduce 500 electric buses and 2,213 new BSVI- compliant buses at a cost of Rs 1,580 crore.

In the presence of the Chief Minister, K Palaniswami, an agreement between the state government and German-based bank KfW was signed in September to procure 500 electric buses and 2,213 BSVI compliant buses.

The tenders were floated to operate 525 electric buses in main cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. These electric buses come under the Centre’s Fame India II scheme and hence TN is the fourth state in the country to achieve this feat.

Electric vehicles charging stations business in Tamil Nadu by Relux Electric

Already in August, among these 525 buses, the chief minister flagged off the State’s first all-electric, air-conditioned bus in Chennai. The buses are from the automobile giant, Ashok Leyland manufactured the buses which have the capacity to carry 50 persons.

Tamil Nadu CM Invites Tesla to India

In 2019, he also visited the Tesla plant in San Francisco to see the manufacturing of eco-friendly vehicles, batteries, and energy storage products.

The visit from Chief Minister Palaniswami will help in changing this scenario. On his tour, he learned about the Tesla Supercharger Network and ways to prevent pollution causing by gas and diesel cars in the state. He also went to the Tesla factory in Fremont and his visit to Tesla was part of the initial plan of his journey to invite Tesla to India. He gave a presentation about the facilities and incentives that the state would offer for investing in the state’s automobile sector.

    100%road tax and registration fee are not not exemption for electric vehicle in Tamil Nadu still it is pending G.O not realized it’s so sad government just bulfing people.
