PMC gets suggestion to start e-vehicle

The elected representatives of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) which is lead Women and Child Welfare Committee chairperson Jyotsana Ekbote have urged the civic administration to introduce electric vehicles facilities on the main roads of the city to reduce the pollution levels in the city.

Ekbote said to Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad that there is a lot of air pollution caused due to the traffic in the city which leads to a rise in the respiratory diseases. “The introduction of small electric vehicles on main city roads will help in improving the traffic problem as well as in reducing the air pollution,” she said.

The cited areas such as Fergusson College Road, Jangli Maharaj Road, Tilak road, Bajirao road, Shivaji road, Kumthekar road and Ganeshkind road are the examples where electric vehicles facilities can be set up by the civic body. The Ekbote said that these measures will also help the people to commute and in generating employment.

The PMC has proposed special initiatives in its 2020-21 budget to set up electric charging stations for electric vehicles in the parking lots of civic buildings. It is also planning zero per cent interest loans for civic staff to purchase bicycles to promote and motorised transport in the city.

It has also declared a fare of Rs 10 throughout the day for commuters to travel in the city using PMPML buses to discourage them from using private vehicles.
