VIT Project to develop battery propulsion systems for EVs
The university, Vellore Institute of Technology and the PSG College of Technology have started working as a team to deliver a project in Tamil Nadu, India. The project centers around the conversion of an Indian conventional four-wheeled vehicle to battery electric. The converted vehicle will be used as a research testing and teaching tool for the better understanding of the demands of electric vehicles in India.
Loughborough University’s Professor Rui Chen, Professor Jin Xuan and Dr Ashley Fly, of the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering, hope this collaborative international project will help India in increasing clean vehicle uptake, improving urban air quality and to meet carbon emission targets.
University academics have been awarded funding to help with the aspects like design and development of a four-wheeled electric vehicle for research and teaching in India. The research is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and it is led by VIT. The Research focuses on developing battery propulsion systems which can withstand the higher amounts of heat.
Professor Chen, Professor Xuan and Dr Fly will provide prowess in the operation and management of lithium-ion batteries, environmental test facilities for battery modules and advanced battery analysis techniques.
They will perform tests in an environmental chamber which is specially dedicated to test the effects of specified environmental conditions on industrial products and electronic components to replicate the challenging climate of India.
