In the presence of the Chief Minister, K Palaniswami, an agreement between the state government and German-based bank KfW was signed in September to procure 500 electric buses and 2,213 BSVI compliant buses.

The tenders were floated to operate 525 electric buses in main cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. These electric buses come under the Centre’s Fame India II scheme and hence TN is the fourth state in the country to achieve this feat.

Already in August, among these 525 buses, the chief minister flagged off the State’s first all-electric, air-conditioned bus in Chennai. The buses are from the automobile giant, Ashok Leyland manufactured the buses which have the capacity to carry 50 persons.
