Demand for Li-ion battery technology

Recently, the demand for Li-ion battery technology has increased tremendously due to electric vehicle adaption in India. According to auto industries, India’s requirement of lithium is expected to be 3,50,000 tonnes per year. Companies like Suzuki and many such companies in India are planning to manufacture lithium-ion batteries in India.

At present, India imports Li-Ion batteries from countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Moreover, manufacturing high power lithium batteries is considerably more complex than that of smaller packs.

ISRO has chosen 10 competent Indian industries for transfer of its in-house lithium-ion technology at a fee of Rs 1 crore. This technology will help Indian industries to “set up lithium-ion cell production facilities” on their own.

A few months back, the ISRO along with VSSC (Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre) has successfully developed and qualified lithium-ion cells of capacities ranging from ‘1.5 Ah to 100 Ah’ for use in satellites and launch vehicles.
