Top 5 Electric Buses Leading India’s Green Revolution in 2025

India’s commitment to sustainable transportation has led to a significant surge in the adoption of electric buses, revolutionizing public transit across the nation. As of 2025, several manufacturers have emerged as frontrunners in this green revolution, introducing advanced electric buses that cater to diverse urban and intercity needs. Here are the top five electric buses leading India’s green revolution in 2025:

1. Tata Starbus Urban 9/12m Electric

Tata Motors has been a pioneer in India’s automotive industry, and the Tata Starbus Urban electric bus exemplifies their dedication to sustainable urban mobility. Available in 9-meter and 12-meter variants, this bus is designed to accommodate over 31 passengers comfortably. Equipped with a 186 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it delivers a robust power output of 245 kW. The bus supports fast charging, allowing it to be fully charged within 2 to 3 hours, and offers a range exceeding 150 kilometers on a single charge. Its modern design, combined with Tata’s reliable engineering, makes it a preferred choice for city transport authorities aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.

2. Olectra C9 Electric Bus

Olectra Greentech has established itself as a significant player in India’s electric bus segment. The Olectra C9 is a 12-meter electric bus that seats between 45 to 49 passengers. Powered by dual 180 kW electric motors, it generates an impressive torque of 3000 Nm. The bus is equipped with a 360 kWh advanced Lithium-Ion-Phosphate battery, offering a range of approximately 300 kilometers on a single charge. With fast-charging capabilities, the C9 can be recharged in about 2 to 3 hours, making it highly efficient for continuous urban operations. Its spacious interiors and long-range capacity have made it a popular choice for city and intercity routes.

3. JBM ECO-LIFE Electric Bus

JBM Auto’s ECO-LIFE series represents India’s first 100% electric bus range, available in both 9-meter and 12-meter configurations. Designed to seat over 35 passengers, the bus is powered by a 261 kWh lithium-ion battery coupled with a 181 kW motor, delivering up to 2500 rpm. It boasts a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 18,940 kg. Depending on traffic conditions, the ECO-LIFE can cover between 150 to 200 kilometers on a single charge, operating efficiently for 10 to 15 hours in typical city scenarios. Its emphasis on zero emissions and sustainable design aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly public transportation solutions.

4. Switch Mobility e1

Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, has introduced the e1 electric bus, reflecting a blend of modern aesthetics and advanced technology. The e1 is designed for urban commutes, offering a comfortable and efficient ride for passengers. While specific technical specifications are continually updated to meet evolving standards, the e1 emphasizes fast charging capabilities, robust battery life, and a design tailored for Indian road conditions. Its introduction has been well-received by various city transport corporations aiming to enhance their electric fleet.

5. BYD K9 Electric Bus

BYD, a global leader in electric vehicle technology, has made significant inroads into the Indian market with its K9 electric bus. The 12-meter bus is powered by BYD’s proprietary battery technology, offering a range that comfortably meets the demands of urban transit routes. As of January 31, 2025, over 2,330 electric buses equipped with BYD’s chassis have been operational across 35 cities in India, capturing a 24% market share in the electric bus segment. These buses have collectively logged approximately 335.2 million kilometers, with the highest mileage on a single vehicle reaching 678,109 kilometers. The K9’s reliability and performance have made it a favored choice among Indian transport operators.

The rapid adoption of these electric buses underscores India’s commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility. With continuous advancements in electric vehicle technology and supportive government policies, the future of public transportation in India is poised to become increasingly green and efficient.
